Jane CAMPION
Born: 30 April 1954
Special Achievements:“She is the second of five women ever nominated for the 66th Academy Award for Best Director”.
In 1993, Writer and Director Jane Campion became the first and only woman filmmaker to win the prestigious Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival (the highest award at Cannes) for her film The Piano, produced by Jan Chapman. In 1994, that film also won the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay and Best Director from the Australian Film Institute.
2016 New Year Honours - Campion was appointed a Dame Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit, for services to film.
1975 - Graduated Bachelor of Arts in Anthropology, Victoria University of Wellington.
1981 - Graduated with diploma in visual arts (painting), University of Sydney Sydney College of the Arts.
1981-1984 - Studied at and graduated from the Australian Film, Television and Radio School (AFTRS).“
1986 - "Her student film Peel: An Exercise in Discipline, which she wrote and directed, … went on to win the Short film Palme d'Or award at the Cannes film festival”.
In addition to The Piano, some other highly acclaimed films are An Angel at My Table and Bright Star.
